About Us

It all started with a passion to help our own aging cats and dogs get healthier. After a lifetime of eating processed food and a consequential lack of graceful aging, we realized that there was clearly a better way to feed them. We immediately started adding generous portions of real food to their commercial processed food. Not only did their quality of life and vitality increase by leaps and bounds, we believe they lived years longer as a result. Our beloved eighty-five pound dog Rufus lived sixteen years and both our ten pound dog Pepper and our cat Dexter made it past seventeen. This only after the four years of fresh food additions to their diets.

Over the years we started noticing the same trend with all the pets we knew. The pets fed name brand commercially processed food maintained what we called “surviving” mode, yet the fresher fed pets were always healthier! We called that “thriving” mode. These cumulative and clear-cut results were a driving force for us to open up our store; we wanted to offer pet parents better, fresher and healthier products for their pets.

Norm Shrout

Norm Shrout, Pet Food Store OwnerCo-owner of Long Leash On Life®, a health food store for dogs and cats in the Northeast Heights of Albuquerque.

Background and Objectives

A graduate of Cornell University, he is a pet health advocate, pet nutritional counselor and supporter of local pet rescue. His ongoing objective includes educating dog and cat parents on basic nutritional concepts as a preventative type of ‘insurance policy’ toward their pet’s health. This theme encourages pet parents to take an active role in their pet’s health by utilizing the best quality food ingredients possible and not relying on what processed food affiliates may claim as “good.” His community outreach project for 2010 involves educating dog parents on building more enriching relationships with their dogs through positive interactions and gentler training methods.

Background and History

Growing up in New York, he attended Cornell University, studying Animal Sciences and eventually Hotel Management. He has always been a pet lover, taking on many rescues over the years. Opening Long Leash On Life® was a chance to give back to all the pets who enrich our lives. This is accomplished by guiding pet parents to the best foods and natural products so their pets can achieve the highest quality of life. Ken is also a big supporter of local rescue organizations, especially the smaller rescue groups in greatest need.
